Istanbul (NINA) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his hope that US President Joe Biden's proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza would be "an honest step to stop the massacres, not an electoral plan."
Erdogan said in a press statement today, Saturday, on board the plane after his visit to Spain and Italy: “I think that the United States has begun to become disturbed by the increasing Israeli arrogance, and the American administration has not explicitly expressed this discomfort, but the voices of the street and the universities show that a shift is taking place.”
The Turkish President added, "Everyone is certain that this convoy will not proceed in this way, and we hope that the atmosphere will change with the upcoming American elections."
Regarding Spain’s position on the Palestinian issue, especially after the recognition of Palestine on May 28, the Turkish president stressed that “it is good to see Turkey and Spain agreeing regarding Palestine.”
He pointed out that the world is now larger than 5 (permanent members of the Security Council), stressing the importance of the 150 countries in the United Nations General Assembly siding with Palestine, and considering that “the United Nations must exploit this opportunity if it wants to restore its reputation that was destroyed by countries like Israel.”
He said, "Recognition of Palestine by members of the UN Security Council could change the atmosphere in the region."
In a separate context, Erdogan renewed his categorical rejection of the Kurdistan Workers' Party's efforts to hold so-called "local elections" in northern Syria.
He said: “We must stress that there is no such thing as elections in areas controlled by terrorist organizations in northern Syria,” considering that they are “tricks to give legitimacy to the terrorist organization and establish a terrorist zone,” stressing that terrorism should not be allowed to pose a threat to Turkey’s security.
In response to journalists' question about purchasing Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, Erdogan replied that it is "important for us because it will help us meet our needs from our NATO allies," noting that "Turkey has alternatives, most notably our local fighter KAAN, if the deal fails."
Yesterday, Friday, the Turkish President left the Spanish capital, Madrid, at the end of an official visit, heading to the Italian city of Borgo Inezia, where he participated in the G7 summit./End
