A security source told the Kurdish media network Rudaw that Lahur Sheikh Jangi and two of his brothers, Polad and Aso, were arrested.
The source reported that Polad Sheikh Jangi's brother was injured after he refused to surrender to security forces.
According to reports, the Sulaymaniyah Security Investigations Court issued an arrest warrant for Lahur Sheikh Jangi, the leader of the Popular Front, on Thursday morning, pursuant to Article 56 of the Iraqi Penal Code.
Earlier, Sulaymaniyah Governor Haval Abu Bakr stated in a statement that the clashes between security forces and Lahur Sheikh Jangi's forces would not solve any problems, calling on everyone to help end this "undesirable" situation.
Large numbers of security forces had been deployed since Thursday evening near the Lalazar Hotel in Sulaymaniyah, where Lahur Sheikh Jangi was staying.
The clashes erupted shortly after 3:00 a.m. on Friday, and according to video footage, flames and smoke billowed from the hotel.
Rudaw News reported earlier that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) counterterrorism forces had advanced on Lahur Sheikh Jangi's headquarters and engaged in a fierce battle with Jangi's forces.
The network quoted Lahur Sheikh Jangi in a video message recorded on the roof of his house, saying: "These friends [the PUK leadership] have decided to attack. This may be my last message, and I will starve to death."
He said: "I could have gone to Europe to live a decent life, but for the sake of the Kurdish people, I decided to stay here and not submit to any oppressive force. I have proven my Kurdishness in all four corners of Kurdistan, and I love you, the Kurdish people. I kiss the eyes of all Kurds, one by one."/End
