The Turkish Defense Ministry stated in a statement that Turkish fighters launched a series of air strikes on PKK militant positions in the areas of Matina, Hakurk, Qandil Mountains, Gara, Assus in northern Iraq, and other locations in northern Syria.
It indicated that these raids “come with the aim of securing the security of the Turkish people and eliminating threats against the Turkish forces, within the framework of the right to self-defense, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Convention,” according to what was stated in the statement.
The Turkish Defense Ministry stated that the raids resulted in the destruction of 24 ISIS sites where party leaders were likely present, in addition to neutralizing “large numbers of militants.”
It explained that the sites affected by the air strikes varied between shelters, caves, ammunition and logistics warehouses, and natural gas production facilities, all of which belong to the PKK.
The Turkish Defense Ministry announced in another statement that 10 PKK militants were killed in other surprise air operations in northern Iraq.
The Turkish Defense Ministry stated in its second statement that the sudden air raids included the areas of Matina and Gara in northern Iraq after movements of PKK militants were observed there, and these raids resulted in the killing of ten of them.
These air strikes came in response to the attack launched by groups of PKK militants on a Turkish army unit stationed in northern Iraq last Saturday night, which resulted in the killing of nine Turkish soldiers and the wounding of 8 others./End
