Turkish Energy Minister: Iraq’s Reactivation of the Kirkuk-Baniyas Oil Pipeline Poses No Threat to Turkey’s Interests
In a press conference held today, Friday, for local and international news agency correspondents in Istanbul, Bayraktar remarked that Turkey believes the energy and mining sectors can serve as tools to foster peace and prosperity. He emphasized the importance of cooperation in promoting stability within Syria and the broader region.
The Turkish Minister noted that the crude oil pipeline between Iraq and Turkey is not currently operating at full capacity. He explained that Ankara has, for years, proposed extending the line to Basra, and that Turkey aims to increase the capacity of the oil transport route from Iraq from 1.5 million to 2.5 million barrels per day. Regarding the energy sector transition, Bayraktar explained that the "National Energy Vision 2040" focuses on electricity. This approach is expected to reduce Turkey’s projected daily crude oil requirements by 2040—from 1.2 million barrels to approximately 720,000 barrels—while keeping natural gas consumption at 57 billion cubic meters, down from a projected 77 billion.
Bayraktar noted that the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) will intensify its activities in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. It will also continue exploration efforts at the Gabar site in Şırnak province and other areas in southeastern Anatolia, alongside expanding its international footprint through partnerships and acquisitions.
He pointed out that the seismic survey vessel *Oruç Reis* is currently heading toward the coast of Pakistan, while drilling operations are underway off the coast of Somalia.
He added that Turkey might conduct exploration operations in the maritime zones of Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon in the future, with decisions to be based on economic feasibility and geological conditions.
On the subject of natural gas, Bayraktar stated that Turkey intends to extend its gas contract with Algeria—which expires next year—and increase supply volumes, praising the reliability of the Algerian company Sonatrach.
He also revealed that discussions are being held with Sudan regarding cooperation in the mining, oil, gas, and electricity generation sectors, anticipating an expansion of Turkish corporate activities in that country. / End
