Tom Barrack, following his meeting with Al-Zaidi: Iraq chooses sovereignty over dependency
In a post on the platform X this Friday, Tom Barrack likened the Middle East to a Rubik’s cube, stating, "Every side is connected to the others; when you move one side, the rest move with it. No single nation—nor any external power—can resolve its complexities on its own."
He added, "Its components can only come together when the countries of the region decide to move them themselves, through patience and collective action." He observed that "this is precisely what Iraq is doing; under the leadership of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, Iraq is choosing sovereignty over dependency, investment over stagnation, and partnership over acting as a proxy."
Tom Barrack underscored that "the United States is proud to stand with Iraq" by "deepening our economic and commercial ties, opening doors for both American companies and Iraqi talent, and building prosperity that benefits everyone." Regarding regional developments, Barrack stated: "We also discussed the more challenging task of de-escalating tensions across the region, containing crises before they spread, and prioritizing diplomacy over escalation."
In this context, he emphasized that "this responsibility lies primarily with the nations of the region—with neighboring states that are prepared to take ownership of their own security and future," noting that "this is the shift currently underway. The United States is a partner in this transition, not a substitute for it."
Concluding his remarks, Barrack affirmed that "a sovereign and prosperous Iraq, situated within a region that takes responsibility for its own stability, serves the interests of the Iraqi people, their neighbors, and the United States."
On Thursday, the Prime Minister received Tom Barrack. The two discussed bilateral relations, prospects for strengthening the partnership between the two countries, and the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, contain crises, and prevent the expansion of conflicts in the region. / End
