Iraq Reports No Immediate Radiological Threat, Confirms Readiness for Nuclear Emergencies
Baghdad /NINA/ – Iraq’s National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Control announced on Thursday that there are currently no indications of an immediate radiological threat to the country, confirming that comprehensive precautionary measures are in place to address any potential nuclear or radiological emergency in the region.
In a statement, the Authority said it had implemented the necessary technical and preventive measures, noting that geographical, geological and meteorological factors suggest that any potential radiological impact on Iraqi territory would likely be limited. Monitoring and surveillance operations are continuing to assess developments.
Authority Chairman Fadhil Hawi Mazban explained that the risk assessment takes into account the considerable distance between the sites concerned and the Iraqi border, as well as their geological characteristics. He noted that some facilities are located in mountainous areas, within granite rock formations and at depths exceeding 100 metres underground, factors that could help contain radioactive materials and limit their potential dispersion.
He added that prevailing wind patterns, particularly in the upper atmosphere, could also direct radioactive fallout away from Iraqi territory, further reducing the likelihood of contamination.
Mazban confirmed that the Authority’s Central Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Operations Room has developed comprehensive response scenarios and contingency plans in coordination with relevant government agencies.
Preparations include border monitoring and early-warning systems connected to international radiation-monitoring networks and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These systems are designed to track background radiation levels, detect any abnormal changes and facilitate timely risk assessments and appropriate responses.
Reaffirming that public safety and environmental protection remain the Authority’s top priorities, Mazban said regional developments are being closely monitored and assessed on an ongoing scientific and technical basis.
He urged citizens to rely exclusively on official and accredited sources of information and avoid spreading or believing unverified reports, stressing that any developments requiring public notification would be announced through official channels./End
