Spanish-Government Investment Collaboration: Launch of Iraq’s First Smart, Automated Waste Collection System
The initiative was launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and the Spanish Embassy in Baghdad, and through a technical partnership with Al-Maher Economic Group and representatives of the Spanish company URD.
Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Salar Mohammed Amin, stated at the launch conference that the event marks a significant milestone in the journey toward making Iraqi cities smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable through the introduction of the URD smart, automated waste collection system. He added that adopting this system represents more than just the introduction of modern waste management technology; it is a national project requiring the integrated efforts of state institutions, the private sector, and investors. This is due to its direct impact on improving the environment, elevating service standards, and enhancing the efficiency of cities and residential complexes.
He explained that the National Investment Commission played a pivotal role in supporting this project. It worked to secure official approvals for adopting the system in new cities and investment-based residential complexes—in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Environment—thereby laying the groundwork for rolling out this model across urban development and investment projects in Iraq.
He further noted that the Commission continues to oversee implementation procedures through a specialized committee comprising relevant stakeholders. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition from the approval stage to actual implementation and to address any requirements or challenges that may arise.
He emphasized that the project's success is a shared responsibility; the Ministry of Municipalities and Construction, the Baghdad Municipality, local authorities, the Ministry of Electricity, the telecommunications sector, developers, investors, and the private sector are all key partners in providing the necessary infrastructure, operations, and technical integration to make the system a success.
The organizational conference highlighted this innovative initiative—tailored for residential complexes, investment projects, and sustainable cities—and reviewed the project's investment and environmental dimensions. / End
