Al-Zaidi: Sinjar Resistance Factions to Begin Handing Over Weapons to the State
The Prime Minister's Media Office stated that Al-Zaidi met on Friday with a delegation from the leadership of the Yazidi Cause Alliance—including the head of its parliamentary bloc, MP Murad Ismail—and the leadership of the Sinjar Resistance Units. The meeting addressed the overall situation in Sinjar District, as well as issues related to its stability, reconstruction, and the future of its people.
The Prime Minister affirmed that the decision to hand over weapons is part of building a state of institutions, protecting the unity of national decision-making, and ending the multiplicity of security decision-making centers.
He stressed that the state would safeguard the rights and acknowledge the sacrifices of members of the Sinjar Resistance Units and the Women's Units by regularizing their status and integrating qualified individuals into Iraqi security institutions in accordance with legal and official frameworks.
The meeting addressed the state of public services in the district, its infrastructure and reconstruction needs, the issue of compensation for those affected, and the creation of suitable conditions for the return of displaced persons to their areas. It also covered the resolution of administrative matters concerning the district’s management, its institutions, and government departments, as well as the administration of the Sinjar Reconstruction Fund.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the Yazidis represent an authentic and vital component of Iraq’s diverse social fabric—a diversity that serves as a source of strength for the country and constitutes a national and humanitarian asset. He acknowledged the crimes and injustices inflicted upon the Yazidi community by terrorist gangs, affirming the government's commitment to securing justice for them, guaranteeing their rights, facilitating their return to their areas, and addressing the aftermath of years of terrorism and displacement.
He stressed that the state would not allow Sinjar to become a theater for conflict, nor would it tolerate the presence of any security or military authority operating outside the framework of the state.
He directed that members of the Yazidi community be included in the "one million residential plots" project and called for efforts to create the necessary conditions for the full return of displaced persons to their areas. He also ordered follow-up on the reconstruction of the Sinjar district and the provision of essential services to help stabilize the population and foster socio-economic stability.
Furthermore, he directed the formation of a high-level committee tasked with conducting a comprehensive study on the security and service-related situation in Sinjar. This committee is to identify the district's needs and the requirements of its residents, propose appropriate solutions, and oversee the integration of Sinjar Protection Force members into official security and service institutions—as well as the regularization of their legal status—in a manner that reinforces state authority and supports stability in the district.
For their part, the head and members of the delegation expressed their full support for the Prime Minister's measures—particularly those concerning the strengthening of state authority, the handover of weapons, and the integration of the Sinjar Resistance Units into official institutions—as well as efforts to combat corruption, implement economic reforms, and bolster Iraq's foreign relations. / End
