Baghdad (NINA) – The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Wednesday a total ban on the importation of 33 food items. It also noted that 15 other crops are subject to a variable ban based on the agricultural calendar and local production seasons.

The Ministry’s official spokesperson, Qusay Al-Hattab, stated—according to the official News Agency—that the Ministry’s mechanism is effective and currently in force under the agricultural calendar. This mechanism has resulted in a total ban on 33 items, including sheep, processed fats, calves intended for breeding, endangered species, predatory piranha fish, all types of minced meat, carcass parts (such as heads and limbs), animal protein, horses, and predatory animals.

He added, "There are 15 items subject to a variable ban, including vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, and eggplants. Decisions regarding whether to allow imports are made based on reports submitted by specialized committees within the Ministry of Agriculture’s Planning and Follow-up Department, following their daily inspections of the Jamila, Zuwaini, and Al-Rashid wholesale markets."

He explained that the Ministry has currently suspended the importation of vegetable crops, following a request submitted by the Minister of Agriculture to the Prime Minister during a General Secretariat meeting; approval was granted to ban imports during the local production season.

He noted that the ban is subject to change; once the season ends—and should a shortage of certain crops be recorded—the Ministry, as part of its strategy, moves to import those crops./ End
