Minister of Communications: We have signed global contracts and seek to enhance confidence in the safe Iraqi corridor for international communications to Europe
Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri said, during her participation in the economic conference of the Iraqi-British Business Council, today, Monday, in the capital, Baghdad, "We have three huge infrastructure networks that are the largest in the Middle East and are called Backbone, and we have Sen Backbone, Huawei Backbone, and Nokia Backbone, and these extend throughout Iraq and are owned by the state, and the state spends on investments in order to provide them to the private sector."
She added, "We have reached more than 4,000,000 fiber optic cable lines connected to the home Viber Phone, which is broadband technology, and this provides fast internet service to every home in Iraq and every school, and we are on our way to more implementation."
She explained, "We in Iraq have a complete internet access rate in various ways, either fixed or mobile internet such as mobile, as there are several licensees, and the ground is available to promote luxurious investment projects."
She continued, "In this government, we have worked on global transit projects to a large extent, because Iraq is the short land corridor that connects the Arabian Gulf to Europe via Turkey, and this corridor is short, safe and easy to maintain for the passage of fiber optic cables compared to the long geographical path that comes across the seas to the Arabian Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, with security threats in this strait for international communications, then passing through the Red Sea, then the Suez Canal, then the Mediterranean Sea, reaching Europe, while we have secured a short path that connects the countries of the Arabian Gulf, and possibly from Asia, India and Singapore."
She added, "We can enable international communications for global companies to Europe only through Iraq, and through Turkey they reach Europe in a short and safe corridor. We have worked to create trust in this Iraqi corridor, as the capacities passing through the Iraqi corridor increased within months of its operation from 10 GB to 1800 GB and are constantly increasing. Our goal in activating the Iraq Transit Corridor is not only to maximize revenues, but to create trust in the Iraqi corridor to add more security and economic stability to the Iraqi state."
Regarding contracting with large global companies specialized in communications from content creators, Al-Yasiri confirmed, "We have signed with a number of global companies, and today we have signed a contract with Omantel, and we are on our way to signing with Ooredoo and other global companies to pass through the Iraqi corridor."
She added, "There is a very big investment opportunity, and Iraq needs it to establish global commercial data centers inside Iraq, as there are many data centers but they are small, and today we have given approvals and are on our way to signing to establish a global data center in Basra, but we still need two other centers in the center and north, for example in Mosul or in Kirkuk with other global companies." Al-Yasiri said, "We are moving towards signing with the British company Vodafone, as a joint memorandum of understanding was signed for a period of six months, and now they are preparing for Iraq and there is ongoing work with them to develop designs, plans and preparatory strategies for launching the fifth generation license (the national mobile phone license)." / End
