BAGHDAD (NINA) - Thousands of Iraqi lawyers demonstrated on Wednesday evening in a protest march through the streets of Baghdad, shouting slogans rejecting corruption, demanding the rule of law and trying those who stole public money.
In a speech by the Iraqi Bar Association, the President of the Iraqi Bar Association called for the amendment of the 2005 constitution to ensure the unity of the land, people, sovereignty and the principle of citizenship instead of religious, national, sectarian and partisan components and affiliations. He pointed out that the Iraqi Bar Association and through the competent committees and its subsidiaries will announce the draft amendment to the Constitution before the people.
The Bar Association also demanded to review the electoral law and the conditions of nomination, election and secret vote and rely on multiple constituencies and not to deport votes to another candidate and ensure the participation of the judiciary to supervise and monitor the elections.
It also called for the abolition of Legislative Decree No. (44) for the year 2008 devoted to the partisan and sectarian quotas in the distribution of its entitlements in the state institutions for the positions of undersecretaries of ministries and heads of bodies and institutions and special grades, calling for the abolition of all laws leading to the overthrow of civil and political rights, constitutional and turn them into judicial files.
The Bar also called for speeding up the legislation of financial disclosure law and the law of “where did you get this from? to combat the corrupt and the manipulators of public money, with clearing the state and government bodies of corrupt and thieves and bribes and exempt them from their government positions for those who have been issued a judicial ruling and the implement the arrest warrants issued by the courts and without providing any protection for them, whether party or political or clan.
The Bar Association called to elect the Supreme Judicial Council and the Courts of Cassation and Appeal from the broad base of judges instead of the House of Representatives to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, rejecting the report of the Minister of Planning, Chairman of the Higher Ministerial Committee for the Investigation of the Events of the October Uprising issued on 22 October because it did not reveal the security authorities, perpetrators of the killings of the demonstrators in preparation for a judicial trial and impose the harshest penalties against them according to the law, because of the magnitude of national losses./ End
